Man’s arrest leads to search for sexual assault victims in Broward
Authorities are asking for women who may have been victims of sexual assault or battery in Broward County to come forward after a 64-year-old man was arrested in Palm Beach County, according to the sheriff’s office.
Verwayne Alexander has ties to Broward County, and investigators believe he may have assaulted or exposed himself to women in the area, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
Alexander was arrested April 2 in Palm Beach County on one count of sexual assault, one count of kidnapping and four counts of indecent exposure, BSO said.
He forced a woman on a Palm Beach County street to get into his car at knife point, according to an arrest affidavit. He is accused of sexually assaulting her on March 30 and attempting to rape her, but she was able to break free and run for help.
Before his arrest, BSO detectives were investigating him in an indecent exposure case. Investigators learned Alexander was an unregistered sex offender and had a March 10 warrant on one count of failure to register, failure to report and indecent exposure. He was arrested on the warrant by the Riviera Beach Police Department, BSO said.
Alexander was being held Monday on the nine counts at the Palm Beach County Jail, records show. His public defender, Sydney Yael Sauer, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
