An 18-year-old driver pulled over for illegal window tinting took off during the traffic stop and was chased by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office until he crashed on Florida’s Turnpike on Wednesday night.

He’s now in jail.

Ryelee Mason Emery-Gonzalaez was going south on Southwest 122nd Avenue and 184th Street in a white 2024 Hyundai Sonata when he was pulled over, according to his arrest affidavit.

A deputy recognized Emery-Gonzalaez for being wanted in a separate case for fleeing and alluding. Deputies say they instructed Emery-Gonzalaez to exit the car, but he did not comply.

Deputies then walked to the driver’s side and reached through the window to remove Emery-Gonzalaez, but he accelerated forward, striking two deputies in the arm, according to his arrest affidavit.

Deputies began to chase him.

“While fleeing, the defendant was observed speeding, failing to stop at multiple red lights, and driving on the opposite side of traffic, displaying a complete disregard for the safety of vehicular and pedestrian traffic,” deputies wrote in his arrest affidavit.

Emery-Gonzalaez eventually lost control of the car and hit a guardrail on Florida’s Turnpike northbound at the Southwest 40th Street exit. Police said he tried to run, but was quickly taken into custody.

He was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding, and possession of a controlled substance.

Emery-Gonzalaez’s 15-year-old passenger was also taken into custody and charged with resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance. A girl in the car was released and not charged.
