BSO fires, arrests detention deputy accused of sexual battery of woman at party
The Broward Sheriff’s Office fired a corrections deputy who is accused of sexually battering a woman during a party in Deerfield Beach earlier this week.
The deputy is in jail on several charges, including sexual battery and false imprisonment.
According to his arrest report, 25-year-old Edwin Wilson Horace forced himself of a woman who was passed out from drinking too much at the party around 1 a.m. Monday.
“On and off duty, I expect all employees to conduct themselves lawfully and with decency. I find the allegations in this case deeply disturbing and concerning. Therefore, immediate action was taken to terminate the probationary employee,” Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a statement.
Horace, who has been working for the sheriff’s office for less than a year, told detectives he had sex with the woman, but he thought it was consensual. However, according to the report, he also told detectives that “what he did was wrong.”
Another woman came forward Wednesday who was also at the house and told deputies that Horace choked her and pushed her several times during the course of the party.
According to the arrest report for that incident, Horace had a romantic relationship with that woman and was angry at her for speaking to another man at the party. One of the times he choked her, she lost her breath, she told deputies, according to the report.
He faces additional charges for that accusation of false imprisonment, strangulation dating violence and battery.
As of Friday, Horace was being held on a total bond of $125,000 in BSO’s main jail in Fort Lauderdale. Information on his legal representation was not immediately available.
