Miami-Dade deputy shoots armed man during traffic stop, sheriff’s office says
A Miami-Dade deputy shot and wounded an armed man during a traffic stop Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office said.
Robbery Intervention Team deputies tried to pull over a car just after 8 p.m. near Northwest 17th Avenue and 71st Street, but the driver sped off, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies in a helicopter saw the car crash into another car near Northwest 17th Avenue and 87th Street, said Detective Samantha Choon, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
The fleeing car then came to a stop. As deputies walked toward the car, a man armed with a handgun got out and one of the deputies shot him “in the lower extremities,” Choon said in a statement.
The man was the only person in the car. The woman driver of the car he crashed into was not injured, Choon said.
The sheriff’s office did not release the reason for the traffic stop.
Deputies recovered two guns. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as is protocol in police-involved shootings.
