Man injured in shooting is arrested after officers discover 2024 murder warrant
A man who was injured in a Monday shooting was arrested after officers realized he was a suspect in a 2024 homicide, according to the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
Kevonte Irons, 26, was involved in the Monday shooting in the city of West Park, police said in a statement, which did not detail Irons’ role in the incident, other involved parties or exact time or place.
He was taken to a hospital, police said. Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies placed Irons in custody after discovering his warrant for first-degree murder in connection with a 2024 Pembroke Pines shooting, police said.
The warrant stemmed from an Oct. 26, 2024, shooting in the area of 11700 Sheridan St.
When officers arrived around 1 a.m., they saw a driver was shot inside a crashed Nissan Altima, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital and died.
The victim was not identified due to Marsy’s Law, police said.
“Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives believe at least two vehicles were driving reckless along Sheridan Street,” police said. “An occupant from one vehicle fired shots at the driver of the Nissan Altima.”
More than a year later, detectives asked for the public’s help in locating Irons. A second man, Calvin Brownlee, 24, had already been identified as a suspect and was arrested on Nov. 27, 2024.
Both men are accused of first-degree murder.
Brownlee is being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail, and Irons was not listed Wednesday as being in custody. Assistant Public Defender Kirk Elizabeth Shields, who is listed as representing Brownlee, had yet to respond to a request for comments. Irons did not have an attorney listed in Broward County court records.
A Pembroke Pines spokesperson said the department couldn’t offer information about Irons’ involvement in the West Park shooting because the Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
When asked via email if Irons was a victim in a West Park strip-club shooting on Monday, a BSO spokesperson wrote: “BSO deputies arrested Kevonte Irons on a Pembroke Pines warrant following an incident that occurred in West Park. Irons was injured during that incident” but would not provide additional details.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that a man was shot outside The Playhouse Gentlemen’s Club, located at 5775 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. in West Park, just before 1 a.m., according to CBS News Miami, a Miami Herald news partner. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
