Florida Memorial University is aware a student reported a rape on campus and has “heightened both internal and external security protocols” while the suspect remained at large Monday, according to FMU President William C. McCormick, Jr.

Miami Gardens police responded Sunday morning to a sexual battery on campus, in the 5800 block of NW 42nd Avenue.

A man allegedly whistled at a student, followed her onto school grounds, pinned her against a building door and assaulted her, the Miami Gardens Police Department said.

McCormick said in a statement the university “takes this matter with the utmost seriousness.”

Florida Memorial University is working closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues, and the “safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remain” the highest priority, he said.

“Out of respect for the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we are limited in the details we can share at this time,” McCormick said. “However, the FMU community will continue to receive timely updates as appropriate.”

A spokesperson for the Miami Gardens Police Department did not respond Monday night to a request for additional information about the incident.
