A teen was shot and seriously injured during a drive-by shooting early Monday, Miami-Dade deputies say.

The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. in the area of Northwest 75th Street and Northwest 16th Avenue in the Gladesview neighborhood, according to the Miami-Dade County Sheriff Office.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that a car pulled up next to the 16-year-old. Then, someone inside the car shot at him before driving off, deputies say.

The Sheriff’s Office said it was alerted to the gunfire through ShotSpotter, a high-tech gunfire detection system. While on their way to the reported shooting, deputies were notified that the injured teen had run to the area of Northwest 76th Street and Northwest 17th Avenue, a street that has a 24-hour convenience store nearby.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the teen, who was in critical condition, to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

No other details were immediately available. Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Sheriff’s Office.
