A man who is accused of shooting another man outside a Hialeah cafeteria — and was arrested after trying to flee on a flight to Cuba — will be held without bond, a judge said Wednesday morning.

Dainel Angel Odio-Surarez, 36, has been in the Metro West Detention Center since his arrest Sunday at Miami International Airport. Odio-Surarez, who sat quietly in an orange jail jumpsuit as an interpreter translated the proceeding into Spanish, got into an argument that escalated to gunfire outside La Lunita cafeteria, 2200 W. Eighth Ct. in Hialeah, police said.

Odio-Surarez drove away in his Mercedes, and detectives located the car at MIA. Odio-Surarez had boarded an American Airlines flight to Havana, according to police.

The plane was taxiing to the runway, when the pilot returned the plane to the gate, where Hialeah police detectives arrested Odio-Surarez, according to his arrest report. When interviewed, Odio-Surarez confessed to shooting the man, whom police have not publicly identified.

After the hearing ended, Odio-Surarez shook his attorney’s hand. Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Ariel Rodriguez said Odio-Surarez’s bond status will be revisited at a hearing on Jan. 26.
