A 7-month-old boy was taken to Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami for leg pain last month. Doctors discovered the child had multiple fractures, leading to a criminal investigation that landed his mother behind bars on Thursday.

When the baby was evaluated by doctors on Dec. 11, it was revealed that he had “a spiral fracture to his left femoral shaft, and fractures to his left and right tribal shaft in different healing stages,” an arrest affidavit for his mother, Johana Barrera Delgado, read.

The 26-year-old mother pointed the blame at a family member who baby-sat her child — telling detectives the injuries happened under her care, according to the affidavit.

On Dec. 12, Barrera Delgado was questioned by Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives. She continued to say the injuries happened while he was with the babysitter.

When the babysitter was brought in for questioning, she admitted she left the child with her daughter on a bed and stepped away for a few minutes. When she heard the baby cry she ran back toward him and told detectives that she was unsure if her daughter had struck him, per the affidavit.

In another interview, detectives set up a “controlled phone call” between the babysitter and Barrera Delgado in which Barrera Delgado told her to “continue with the story that was told to the police, and everything would be okay,” according to the affidavit. She also said the baby was dropped off with a swollen leg and the injuries did not happen while under her care.

Barrera Delgado was taken into custody on Thursday and told deputies that “the victim fell off her bed a couple of times, while under her care. She also admitted to grabbing the victim’s left leg and putting his foot into his own mouth,” the affidavit read.

She is charged with aggravated child abuse.

Jail records show that Barrera Delgado remains jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday. Records show that she is on an immigration hold.
