A Broward County police sergeant allegedly grabbed a woman by the face and neck Wednesday night “to the point she felt she could not breathe” and dragged her across a front lawn, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives responded around 7 p.m. to a domestic disturbance in Pompano Beach and found Sgt. Scott Nida, 54, and the woman, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

There was a fight between them, and Nida is accused of injuring the woman’s face and neck.

She told detectives he grabbed her, pushed her to the ground and dragged her across the lawn, the sheriff’s office said. She ran toward her car after freeing herself.

“The victim said Nida followed her, pushing her into the passenger seat and drove away until she was able to convince him to let her go,” the sheriff’s office said.

Nida was arrested on one count of false imprisonment, one count of domestic battery by strangulation and one count of touch or strike battery. He was being held Thursday at the Broward County Main Jail pending a hearing, jail records show.

“Domestic violence is unacceptable especially from someone who is sworn to uphold the law,” Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said in the statement.

Nida, who has been employed by the sheriff’s office since 2005, is on administrative investigative leave without pay.
