16-year-old Tamarac boy fatally shot. Shooter is claiming self-defense, BSO says
A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in Tamarac on New Year’s Eve, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
And, detectives say the man accused of pulling the trigger, whom the sheriff’s office has not named, claimed self-defense and was subsequently released.
The shooting happened around 10:10 p.m. at 7913 NW 71st Ave. When deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue paramedics arrived, they found the teen, Orlando Wedderburn, with a gunshot wound, said Carey Codd, a BSO spokesman.
Paramedics airlifted Wedderburn to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died, Codd said. A woman was also grazed by a bullet and treated at the scene, according to Codd.
The man accused of shooting Wedderburn stayed at the scene and was questioned by detectives, who later let him leave, Codd said. Detectives are taking the case to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed, Codd added.
