Miami-Dade deputy arrested after choking girlfriend during argument, report says
A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested Sunday after being accused of choking his girlfriend during a domestic dispute, according to an arrest report.
Vikardy Theodore, 25, is facing a domestic battery by strangulation charge after his girlfriend of six years said he “applied pressure” to her throat, impeding her breathing for 35 to 40 seconds, the report says. The deputy’s girlfriend told investigators that she and Theodore had gotten into an argument that escalated.
Theodore’s girlfriend, the report says, had “minor red markings” on her neck. Theodore has pleaded not guilty to the charge, according to a document filed in court on Monday by attorney David Braun, who is representing Theodore.
Theodore was handcuffed at his apartment in North Miami and was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He was released after posting a $2,500 bail. A bond court judge also ordered Theodore to stay away from his girlfriend.
The sheriff’s office on Tuesday told the Herald that Theodore was “relieved of duty.” In a statement, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said she was “disappointed” by the deputy’s arrest.
“Domestic battery is a serious offense, this behavior is unacceptable, and the deputies who serve under my leadership are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct at all times,” the sheriff said in the statement.
