Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a man they say shot a transgender woman to death inside a car in Lauderdale Lakes Friday night.

Deputies and paramedics found 21-year-old Maurice Harrison, who identified as a woman and went by the name Girlalala, sitting in the passenger side seat of a car parked in the 3300 block of Northwest 37th Street around 7 p.m.

Harrison was shot several times, BSO spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said.

Harrison died after being taken to Broward Health Medical Center by paramedics, Grossman said.

The man who deputies say shot Harrison, Shanoyd Whyte, Jr., 25, stayed on the scene and was arrested, Grossman said.

Detectives say the two got into an argument in the car, which turned physical. At some point, Whyte shot Harrison, Grossman said. Whyte told detectives he and Harrison had been in a years-long relationship.

As of Monday, Whyte was being held in Broward County jail without bond on a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm.
