A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot and killed last week after a traffic crash escalated into gunfire, with the suspect shooting the officer several times before turning the gun on himself.

Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was fatally shot by Steven David Rustrian, 21. During a struggle, Rustrian grabbed the deputy’s weapon and fired at him several times. Days later, it’s still unclear why the scuffle ensued.

So, what happened leading up to — and following — the shooting?

Before 3:50 p.m.: Rustrian gets into an accident with another vehicle near Southwest 122nd Avenue and SW 128th Street.

Around 3:50 p.m.: Jaramillo, assigned to the Kendall District Station, was called to the “minor” crash. He was the only deputy who responded to the crash, part of standard policy for collisions with minor damage.

After 3:50 p.m.: Rustrian fled the scene and went into a nearby parking lot, switching seats with his passenger, according to deputies. Jaramillo spoke with the passenger, who at first said he was driving but quickly admitted Rustrian was behind the wheel.

Around 5 p.m.: The sheriff’s office confirmed Jaramillo was killed while responding to the crash. During a news conference, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Jaramillo was “brutally attacked, and he was murdered.”

“He’s not only a deputy. He’s a son, a brother and a friend,” Cordero-Stutz said. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, defending you, and we need to understand as a community that this is just unacceptable.”

Afterward, an ambulance carrying Jaramillo’s body in a motorcade left the hospital as dozens of police officers saluted. The body was taken to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office in Miami.

The following morning, the sheriff held another news conference, in which she spoke about the Killian High School and University of Central Florida alum’s sacrifice. Jaramillo’s father, David Jaramillo, is a retired Miami-Dade Police detective and was president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association. Devin Jaramillo was a “legacy kid” who was well-respected among the sheriff office’s ranks.

“He could have done anything with his professional career, but he chose public service, and he chose to do it in this community to serve us, and he gave the ultimate price in his service,” Cordero-Stutz said.
