Miami-Dade deputy shoots man at Walmart. He died at the hospital, agency said
A Miami-Dade deputy shot and killed a man at Goulds Walmart Thursday morning after responding to a call about shoplifting at the store, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputy was patrolling the area near the store at Southwest 211th Street around 7:15 a.m. when he received a call that security saw the man stealing items, said Detective Joseph Peguero, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
When he went inside the store, he made contact with the man security identified as the person shoplifting, Peguero said. The man ran to a covered parking lot outside the store and fought with the deputy who was tying to subdue him, Peguero said.
The deputy realized the man was armed with a gun during the struggle and shot him, Peguero said. Whether the man pulled the weapon is not clear. As in all shootings involving police officers, this is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The man collapsed on the street right outside of the parking lot. The deputy immediately began life-saving measures, Peguero said, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics took him to a hospital in critical condition. He died later in the morning, Peguero said.
The sheriff’s office has not named the man.
Thursday’s incident is the second time this week a Miami-Dade deputy opened fire in the line of duty.
Earlier in the week, a deputy shot and wounded a teen wielding a semiautomatic rifle in Homestead following an armed carjacking response in the area.
