Man killed after road rage gunfire erupts on Florida’s Turnpike in Miami-Dade: MDSO
A man was killed in a shooting Sunday night on Florida’s Turnpike near Miami Gardens, officials confirmed Monday morning.
The shooting, which detectives believe was the result of a road rage incident, occurred at around 7:35 pm. on the highway near Northwest 199th Street. The gunfire, according to Florida Highway Patrol, involved a black Cadillac SUV and a silver Hyundai.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 25-year-old Kendric Javonne Lesesne.
Per the sheriff’s office, an off-duty Biscayne Park police sergeant was driving north on the highway when he watched the Hyundai weave in and out of traffic. He then heard a loud bang and saw the Hyundai crash into the Cadillac, the sheriff’s office said.
The officer walked up to the Hyundai and the passenger got out of the car and said the driver, Lesesne, was shot, said Detective Samantha Choon, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said.
The sergeant, who has not been named, rendered medical aid to Lesesne, but Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced him dead when they arrived, Choon said.
The northbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for about six hours, according to FHP.
Sheriff’s office homicide detectives are investigating the killing. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Detectives are asking the public’s help in locating any suspects and the car that the gunfire came from, Choon said. Anyone with information on the shooting should call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-8477.
