A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy responding to a dog bite call shot the animal when it tried to attack him Tuesday morning in Lauderdale Lakes, the agency said.

The deputy arrived to the 3900 block of NW 35th Avenue, where a man had suffered multiple dog bites, when the animal turned on him around 11:40 a.m., said Gerdy St. Louis, a BSO spokeswoman.

The deputy shot and injured the dog, St. Louis said.

Zachary Rinkins, a spokesman for Broward Animal Care, said the dog’s owners have given up custody of the animal, and that veterinarians are deciding whether it should be euthanized.

The sheriff’s office’s Internal Affairs Unit is investigating the shooting, St. Louis said.
