A man is hospitalized after being shot in the abdomen near a Fort Lauderdale 7-Eleven early Thursday morning, according to police.

Around 4:30 a.m., officers arrived at the 2900 block of East Sunrise Boulevard after getting a call about a shooting. There, they found a wounded man.

Police say the shooting started as a “verbal altercation” that escalated when the shooter pulled out a gun and shot the victim. .

The injured man was taken to the hospital by fire rescue where he is in critical but stable condition, police say.

The shooter fled the scene, possibly in a light-colored sedan, according to police.
