A woman had just stepped out of her car to smoke a cigarette in a downtown Miami park Tuesday morning when a man approached her, pointed a gun at her and yelled that she was going to die, according to Miami Police.

The gunman aimed his weapon at several other people at Maurice A. Ferré Park, 1075 Biscayne Blvd., before being arrested, police say.

Brent Williams, 33, of California, is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm, displaying a firearm while committing a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police said that when Williams approached the woman, she hid behind her car and watched as he walked away, continuing to point the gun at others.

About an hour later, around 10 a.m., officers interviewed a man who said he heard what sounded like a gunshot while walking near the park. The witness reported seeing Williams fire the weapon in the park and point it at pedestrians, according to police.

The man called 911 and later saw officers detain Williams as he crossed Biscayne Boulevard and headed west on Northeast Eighth Street.

When confronted by police, Williams raised his hands, lied on the ground and admitted he had a gun in his pocket, police said. A records check revealed the firearm, a gray Ruger P94, had been reported stolen in Miami Gardens.

Police said Williams became “irate and refused to talk” after his arrest. Jail records show he remains at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on an $8,500 bond, though some charges are listed as “to be set.”
