North Miami Beach officers shoot knife-wielding man after possibly bogus 911 call
North Miami Beach police officers shot and wounded a man who confronted them with a knife Saturday morning after a “bogus” 911 call, authorities say.
Around 9:40 a.m., officers rushed to the 1600 block of Northeast 164th Street after a 911 caller reported a person was stabbed by a man, North Miami Beach Police Chief Juan Pinillos said at a news conference. Officers didn’t find an injured person, but noticed a man with a knife approaching them.
After the man ignored several commands to drop the knife, Pinillos said, he charged the officers, who then shot him.
The unidentified man was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery, Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami reported. He is in stable condition.
Pinillos said police believe the 911 call was made by the armed man and that he wanted to be confronted by officers.
“This is still fresh. We’re still trying to piece everything together. It could have been a suicide by cop, could have been someone in a mental crisis that was seeking a different alternative,” Pinillos said, according to Local 10 News.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as is department protocol.
