Miami cop fired gun during argument with boyfriend, deputies say. She was arrested

Miami Herald

A Miami police officer was handcuffed after she fired a gun during an argument with her boyfriend, deputies say.

Sthephany Canizares, 27, was arrested on aggravated assault and discharging a firearm charges on Aug. 29. She was booked into jail on Sunday but released after posting a $500 bond.

A Miami-Dade judge dismissed the assault allegation, ruling that police didn’t present enough evidence to back up the charge, according to WPLG- Local 10. Canizares was also allowed to continue having contact with her boyfriend.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Canizares and her boyfriend’s home after Canizares called 911 and said she was being held against her will, according to a report obtained Tuesday. When deputies responded, Canizares ran away from them.

At the scene, Canizares’ boyfriend told police they had been having relationship issues. Their argument, the report says, started when he was awakened by Canizares on the phone outside the house. She refused to come inside.

Instead, the boyfriend saw Canizares outside with a firearm in her right hand, according to the document. He tried to de-escalate the situation but sprung into action when he heard what he believed to be a gunshot.

That’s when Canizares’ boyfriend grabbed his firearm — and the couple’s child from the crib — and locked himself in the bedroom, the report says. Through the door, the boyfriend told Canizares to calm down. At one point, Canizares told her boyfriend that she put the gun away and contacted police, according to the document.

Canizares called police three hours later; what she said was redacted in the report. She was taken into custody and made statements that were, too, redacted.

Canizares was taken to Jackson South for an evaluation due to her “abnormal behavior,” according to the report. Investigators located her weapon with a spent casing inside at the scene.

The Miami Police Department said Tuesday that Canizares was relieved of duty with pay.
