Police say North Miami children neglected, malnourished. Now, parents are jailed

The children of a North Miami couple were severely malnourished and neglected, with their 4-year-old child weighing just 15 pounds and their 7-year-old never enrolled in school, police said in arrest reports.

On June 24, North Miami officers arrived to Jackson North Medical Center and met with a Department of Children and Families investigator who told officers she was taking custody of the children.

The children weren’t properly fed and haven’t seen a doctor since 2022, an investigator told police.

The children were fed by a pediatric vanilla shake, puréed banana, water and multigrain rice. The children weren’t enrolled in school, according to the reports.

The parents, 32-year-old Gabrielle Milfort and 34-year-old Charmy Milfort, were referred to a specialist in 2022 but never followed up with doctors until June 2025, when they took the children in to be evaluated for developmental disorders, police said.

Their 7-year-old child is non-verbal, severely malnourished, does not know how to use the bathroom on his own and still uses diapers. His younger brother could not walk or talk, was malnourished and constipated due to dehydration. Doctors later discovered he had a broke arm and leg.

Police say the boys were supervised by their unemployed mother. The couple had recently leased a furnished apartment and financed a car, funds that police say could have been used to provide the children with medical care.

Police noted that the children’s health has improved while under the care of medical proffesionals.

The parents were arrested on Wednesday on a child neglect with no great bodily harm charge. Gabrielle Milfort willingly spoke to the police and provided a statement that was redacted in her arrest report.

Court records indicate that Gabrielle Milfort has since bonded out of jail.

Charmy Milfort remains jailed up at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Friday morning. Records show he had warrants out for his arrest on charges of resisting an officer, false reporting a bomb or explosive and threatening a public servant. Attorney Guy Robinson declined to comment.

Both pleaded not guilty to the child neglect charge.
