A man and woman are dead in shooting and crash in West Miami-Dade, deputies say
A man and a woman are dead following a suspected murder-suicide that began with a shooting in the Tamiami area and ended with a car crash in Sweetwater, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were first called around 10:30 a.m. Friday to a home near the 1000 block of Northwest 127th Path in the Tamiami area, where they found a woman in her 30s dead outside the home, according to police detective Joseph Peguero Rivera. She was declared dead by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Then, about three miles away, a multi-car crash happened near Southwest 107th Avenue and Third Street, close to Florida International University. The driver of a black SUV, a man in his 40s and involved in the crash, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Peguero-Rivera said. He was taken to the hospital fire-rescue where he later died.
One other person involved in the crash was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Investigators haven’t confirmed the relationship between the dead man and woman, but say the man is suspected of shooting the woman.
Hours after the woman was shot to death, police descended on the West Miami-Dade neighborhood.
Luis Santana, 75, has lived in the quiet neighborhood for more than 25 years.
“This is the first time anything like this has ever happened,” Santana said as he pulled into his driveway Friday afternoon and seeing his street packed with sheriff’s office patrol cars and a crime scene truck. “How tragic.”
Hugo Hernandez has lived in a house in the subdivision for well over 20 years. His parents were the original owners, and he now lives there with his wife.
“Nothing ever happens here,” Hernandez, 56, said. “Everyone kind of keeps to themselves. When everyone started coming outside, we knew something was wrong.”
