Pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run on a major Miami street, police say

A hit-and-run driver killed a woman during Monday morning’s rush hour, Miami police said.

The investigation shut down traffic in Liberty City on Northwest Seventh Avenue from 58th to 62nd streets, also known as Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, until just before noon.

When police got to Northwest Seventh Avenue and 60th Street around 8:10 a.m., they found Koritza Ortiz, 76, unconscious with visible injuries. Miami Fire Rescue officials pronounced her dead shortly after.

A preliminary investigation shows Ortiz was hit while walking eastward on 60th Street, confirmed City of Miami Police Department spokesperson Kiara Delva. It’s still unclear whether she walked down a designated crosswalk or not.

Ortiz’s body has since been removed from the crash site by the medical examiner and the area reopened to regular traffic.

An investigation to identify the car and driver responsible for the crash is still underway.

Anyone who knows anything about the hit-and-run death should reach out to Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade & the Florida Keys, either online or at 305-471-8477 (TIPS).
