BSO deputy shot man after he punched another officer in the face, officials say

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a man after he punched another officer in a residential neighborhood Sunday afternoon, officials say.

Just before 12:30 p.m., authorities received a report about a suspicious incident involving weapon, BSO spokesperson Carey Codd said. Deputies responded to the 4000 block of Southwest 26th Street in West Park, where the man later punched a deputy in the face.

One of the deputies fired at the man, who was struck by a bullet and taken to a hospital, according to Codd. The deputy who was punched in the face was, too, treated for their injuries at a hospital.

BSO homicide detectives and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the shooting — and what led up to the gunfire. BSO’s internal affairs office is conducting its own probe into any deputies involved in the shooting.

The deputies that fired their weapons are placed on administrative assignment, Codd said. Officials haven’t released the identity — or condition — of the person who was shot.
