Hialeah man knocks on neighbor’s door. Shoots and kills man who opens it, cops say
A man was gunned down at a Hialeah apartment complex Tuesday afternoon after a neighbor knocked on the door and fired a single shot at him, according to police.
Just after 3:00 p.m., Hialeah Police were called to 710 East 9th Street after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a man lying near the entrance of Apartment #202 with a gunshot wound to the upper left side of his torso. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
While investigating, a witness directed officers to Apartment #201, where they said the shooter had gone. Police knocked on the door and detained 55-year-old Pedro Blanco, who matched the witness’s description, according to his arrest affidavit.
During their investigation, detectives found a security camera mounted above Blanco’s apartment door. With consent from Blanco’s father, police reviewed the footage.
The video reportedly showed Blanco leaving his apartment with his hand inside a light-colored bag and approaching Apartment #202. When no one answered the door, he began to walk away — but as the door opened, he turned back, raised his arm, and fired a shot into the apartment.
After the shot was fired, the video appears to show Blanco removing a gun from the bag, trying to get into the apartment, and then returning to his own unit with the weapon.
Family members identified the victim as 31-year-old Yoendri Campos, who was visiting the apartment complex, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami.
“He knocked on the door, my cousin and his friend open the door and there was a guy there and he shot him and that’s it,” his cousin, Braulio, told CBS Miami. “He was everything to me. He was my cousin but he taught me everything.”
Police have yet to say what they believe led Blanco to open fire.
Blanco was still wearing the same clothes as seen in the video when they took him into custody, according to police. During a search of his apartment, investigators say they found a black 9mm handgun inside a tan plastic bag hidden in a dresser drawer, as well as a spent shell casing in the kitchen trash.
Jail records show Blanco remains jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Wednesday morning and has a bond status of “to be set.”
