Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy jailed, accused of beating wife at Homestead winery, MDSO says
A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy was jailed over the weekend on charges of beating and pushing his wife to the ground as they were leaving a winery in Homestead.
Around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Anthony Zayas, 39, and his wife were inside their Tesla, leaving the Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery, 30205 SW 217th Ave., when they started to argue, according to his arrest affidavit.
He then began to punch and slap her, the report says.
The victim, fearing for her life, tried to exit the vehicle through the passenger-side door. Zayas then allegedly pushed her, causing her to “violently hit the ground,” detectives wrote in the affidavit.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took her to Baptist Homestead Hospital. Her injuries included: abrasions and contusions to her right shoulder, hands and face and a fractured tooth.
Zayas refused to make any statements and was arrested on Sunday by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office; he was charged with a felony battery charge and a misdemeanor battery charge.
“I am angered and deeply disappointed by the arrest of one of my deputies for domestic violence,” Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement to the Miami Herald. “There is absolutely no place in this agency, or in our profession, for individuals who engage in such behavior.”
The name of Zayas’ attorney was not available on the Miami-Dade clerk’s website.
Court records show that Zayas has since bonded out of jail. A stay-away order has been issued, prohibiting him from contacting his wife, with whom he shares a home and children.
