A Key Largo man stabbed a Monroe County deputy in the face and tried to grab his sidearm as officers tried to subdue him last week, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital with a wound to his eye, the sheriff’s office said.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon, around 4:45 p.m., when deputies went to County Road 905 responding to reports of a man placing boulders on the roadway and tampering with fire hydrants, noted Adam Linhardt, sheriff’s office spokesman.

When deputies arrived, Linhardt said David Ray Wyrick, 58, pulled out a pocket knife. He fought with deputies as they tried to arrest him, prompting them to shock him with a stun gun. He continued fighting, picked up a metal pipe that had a nail attached to hit and stabbed Sgt. Robert Dosh in the eye.

Wyrick also tried pulling Dosh’s handgun from its holster during the struggle, Linhardt added.

Deputies then subdued him and arrested him.

“I am grateful the serious injuries to Sgt. Robert Dosh do not appear to be life-threatening, and that this suspect is in jail,” Sheriff Rick Ramsay said in a statement. “This incident is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face each and every day they put on their uniform.”

Paramedics first took Dosh to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, but then transported him to HCA Florida Kednall Hospital for further treatment to his eye, Linhardt said. He has since been released from the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

Wyrick was booked into Monroe County jail on charges of attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest with violence.

As of Monday, he was being held on a bond of $250,000, according to jail records. Information on his legal representation was not immediately available.
