An off-duty Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputy was gunned down on Monday night in what investigators say was a targeted attack.

Deputies responded to reports of gunfire at around 7:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Northwest Avenue D in Belle Glade.

Upon arrival, they found, 39-year old Basil Powell suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Therese Barbera, spokeswoman for PBSO.

Authorities believe Powell was ambushed while returning home. As he exited his vehicle, he was immediately fired upon. However, Barbera has stated that this incident is not related to his role as a corrections deputy.

Deputy Sheriff Basil Powell was assigned to the West Corrections Center, having been hired in October 2021.

PBSO’s Violent Crimes Division detectives are investigating his death.

A ceremonial escort will take place Tuesday evening from St. Mary’s Hospital to the Medical Examiner’s Office to honor the deputy.
