5-month-old found with cocaine in his system after hospital visit. His mother jailed
A five-month-old baby was hospitalized after a fall earlier this month — leading to his mother’s arrest when South Florida doctors found cocaine in his system, according to deputies.
On Jan. 4, the baby boy was taken to the hospital for a fall. A medical analysis revealed he had ingested an “unknown amount of cocaine,” according to the arrest report of his mother, Naomi Delosangeles Ruiz. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office did not detail how the child fell or the extent of his injuries.
A drug test by the Department of Children and Families revealed Delosangeles Ruiz also had cocaine in her system.
“The defendant failed to provide and protect the victim with care, supervision and services necessary to maintain the victim’s physical and mental health,” investigators wrote in her arrest report.
Deloangeles Ruiz was arrested and charged with child neglect with no great bodily harm and taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she remains as of Thursday afternoon.
Court records show a judge ordered her to stay away from her son and she has pled not guilty to the charge.
Her attorney did not immediately respond to the Miami Herald’s request for comment.
