Two children shot, including the second Miami-Dade child homicide in 2025’s first days

By the time 2025 was four days old, Miami-Dade police were investigating the second shooting death of a child.

Saturday night, Miami-Dade police say, two children were shot near the corner of Northwest 13th Street and Sixth Avenue in Florida City. Though airlifted by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Jackson South’s trauma center, Johvan Taylor died at the hospital.

He was 13.

The other child is hospitalized in stable condition.

Social media mourners said Taylor, nicknamed “Woodah,” loved playing football like his uncle, Maurice Alexander, who made the NFL out of Booker T. Washington High and FIU.

Miami-Dade police say early investigation found that a group of youths were outside a home when at least one shooter approached “and shot into the group” before running away.

Wednesday, just a few minutes into the new year, 10-year-old Yaneliz Munguia was killed by a stray bullet in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood.
