A man was arrested Monday after allegedly threatening people with a knife at a gas station in Hialeah and causing a scene that extended into Medley, according to police.

At about 10:35 a.m. police arrived at a Wawa gas station, 2901 W 16th Ave in Hialeah after reports of a shirtless man threatening people with a knife.

Police interviewed two men who said Joel Medina,51, suddenly approached them with a knife.

One man told police Medina came up to him while he was pumping gas. Medina, who had a knife visible in his pocket, allegedly threatened to stab the man, according to his arrest report.

Another man stayed in his car and also saw the knife in his pocket, police say.

Medina then crossed the street and began threatening bystanders, causing them to disperse, according to police.

He then returned to Wawa and threatened the same two men again, this time with the knife in his hand.

That is when the man who had been pumping gas pulled out a gun. Medina saw the gun and immediately fled the scene, according to police.

He crossed Okeechobee Road into Medley, where police found him. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Police say Medina is unhoused and jail records show he is at Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center on a $5,000 bond as of Tuesday morning.
