Three officers fatally shoot armed man during standoff in Fort Lauderdale, police say
Multiple police officers fatally shot a man who armed with a gun outside a Fort Lauderdale house Wednesday morning, according to the department.
Police arrived at the house, in the 300 block of Southwest 25th Avenue, around 10:45 a.m. after getting calls about a man having a mental health crisis, said Detective Ali Adamson, a Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman. While on their way, officers were told the man was armed with a gun and that other people were inside the home, Admamson said.
When officers got there, the 21-year-old walked out of the house with a gun and ignored their commands to drop the weapon, Adamson said.
“The male continued to endanger those around him, including the officers, and officers were forced to engage him,” Adamson said.
Three officers fired their weapons, she said.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue paramedics took the man to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died, Adamson said.
The other people inside the house with the man weren’t harmed, Adamson said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
“In accordance with departmental policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of FDLE’s investigation and an internal review,” said Adamson.
