After a three-year search, authorities have captured a man accused of fatally shooting a father of two outside a South Miami-Dade apartment complex, officials confirmed.

On Friday, the FBI announced that 23-year-old Joshua Ismael Campos of Miami-Dade County was taken into custody by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office for his alleged involvement in the murder of 27-year-old Demetrius Harris on July 25, 2021 at an apartment complex near Southwest 270th Street in Naranja.

Police say Campos fired at least 18 rounds at Harris while his girlfriend and 5-year-old son were nearby.

On the evening of his death, Harris was arguing with Campos’ girlfriend, Maxine McCord, and her family members in the courtyard of the apartment complex, according to Miami-Dade Police.

Police say Campos then exited his apartment and shot at Harris before fleeing the scene with his girlfriend. The couple left behind a one-year-old child with family members.

Harris was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue where he was later pronounced dead.

Shortly after the killing, Campos was charged in Miami-Dade with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Despite a warrant being issued, Campos remained at large. In February, he was charged in federal court with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

In March the FBI offered $10,000 for information that led to his arrest.

Harris’ loved ones — including his two young daughters — gathered at a news conference in March to plead with the public for answers, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami. “That was my first born son,” said father Demetrius Harris Sr. “He was my best friend. What he did, . . . he took a lot from me.”

The investigation remains ongoing, involving multiple agencies, including the Miami-Dade Police Department, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Tampa’s Sarasota Resident Agency, the FBI’s South Florida Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force and FBI Miami.

“Because this is an ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time,” the FBI said in a press release on Friday.
