Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives say a man was fatally shot after he tried to force himself into a car that was occupied by a mother and her children at a Pompano Beach gas station Sunday afternoon.

Sheriff’s office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics arrived at the RaceTrac gas station at 599 Altantic Blvd. around 5 p.m. and found 37-year-old Brian Semil wounded by one gunshot. He was taken to Broward Health North, where he died, said sheriff’s office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman.

Detectives say their preliminary investigation concluded Semil tried forcing himself into the woman’s car, and three men intervened. During the struggle, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot Semil, Grossman said.

All three men and other witnesses stayed on the scene and cooperated with deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

Police have not yet named the man who fired his weapon.

Detectives will present their findings to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office for review when they wrap their complete investigation, Grossman said.
