Man killed after intervening in a fight between young girls in Florida City, cops say

A man died after he was shot Tuesday while trying to intervene in a “dispute” among a group of young girls that quickly escalated, according to police.

The altercation ended with the victim being shot by an “unknown subject,” Miami Dade Polic Det. Angel Rodriguez said in an email to the Herald. The exact circumstances of the shooting remain unclear.

Police offer $5000 to anyone who can give a tip leading to an arrest.

At about 5:30 p.m., officers arrived to the area of Northwest 14th Street & Northwest First Court after reports of a shooting, but found no victim, according to Florida City Police Sgt. David Hunsberger.

A short time later, 47-year-old Johnny Lewis Stevenson arrived at Homestead Hospital where he was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, said Hunsberger

Stevenson died during surgery, according to police.

Miami-Dade Police Homicide Bureau is investigating along with Florida City detectives. Anyone with information regarding the incident should call Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Det. D. Morales at (305) 471-2400.
