Fort Lauderdale man kills ex-stepfather — then calls 911, cops say. He faces murder charge
Investigators on Wednesday provided more details that paint a clearer picture into what transpired the day a 23-year-old allegedly gunned down his former stepfather inside a Fort Lauderdale home.
On July 6, around 10:50 a.m., Darien Massad Turner called 911 and told the operator that a man had been shot, according to an arrest report obtained by the Miami Herald.
Shortly after, his mother made a 911 call saying her ex-husband, 44-year-old Christian Colon, was suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officers arrived to find Colon dead on the living room floor of the home, 112 Nurmi Drive, a 5-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom residence in the multimillion-dollar Nurmi Isles neighborhood.
Turner was immediately detained at the house after his mother informed officers that he was the shooter. She detailed how Turner had pushed past her to enter the house right before firing the fatal shots at his ex-stepfather.
Police have not shed insight on what led Turner to shoot Colon.
Court records show a judge on Sunday ordered him to undergo a mental health screening.
Jessica Massad, Turner’s mother, has owned the house since 2016, Broward County property records show. Though Colon and Massad divorced in October 2023, she told investigators that Colon had since returned to live in the home, as they were “trying to work things out.”
It is unclear whether Turner was living there at the time of the shooting.
Turner also dislocated his shoulder sometime before police arrived. As a result, he was transported to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s headquarters once medically cleared. It’s unclear how he sustained the injury.
Turner was booked Saturday into Broward County Main Jail, where he’s currently being held without bond and faces a first-degree murder charge.
