13-year-old struck in driveby shooting expected to recover

A 13-year-old was wounded in a driveby shooting in Southwest Miami-Dade late Thursday night, and police aren’t certain if the young girl and her family were the intended targets.

The child was shot in the torso area and is expected to make a full recovery, Miami-Dade police said. The family had only recently moved into the home.

According to police, the girl and six friends and family members were standing outside a home in the 22000 block of Southwest 115th Court just before midnight when two people pulled up in a red, Chevy Astro van and opened fire. Only the girl was hit.

Family members put the girl in a car and began driving to the hospital when they were intercepted by police at South Dixie Highway and 168th Street. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene, treated the child, then transported her to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
