A baby boy died Monday morning after construction workers found him unresponsive inside a dumpster next to a Hollywood apartment complex undergoing renovations, police said.

Around 8:07 a.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of Rodman Street after the workers found the baby not breathing, Hollywood police said in a news release.

“Life-saving measures were immediately performed, however, the infant was pronounced deceased,” Deanna Bettineschi, a police spokeswoman, said in a news release

John Mitala, owner of Infinity Roofing, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel that his workers spotted the baby as they were preparing to replace a building’s roof.

“Somebody happened to notice the box in the dumpster that didn’t belong to us,” Mitala told the Sun Sentinel. “When they opened it, they saw the baby and immediately called police.”
