No food, no power: Miami mother left her 6-year-old, 1-year-old sons home alone, cops say

A 6-year-old boy turned to police for help after he and his 1-year-old brother were left home alone, authorities said. The “very dirty” living conditions in which they were found led officers to charge their mother with neglect.
Demetria Antwonette Spencer, 25, was charged with two counts of child neglect with no great bodily harm, records show. As of Friday, she remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, the 6-year-old called 911 and told the operator his mother had left him and his brother alone in their home near Miami Shores, according to an arrest report.
Officers found the boys inside a “very dirty” home that did not have power or food. The report stated that the children also appeared to be unwashed.
Spencer was nowhere to be found. It took about four hours for a Florida Department of Children and Families investigator to collect the kids. During that time, Spencer still didn’t show.
“[Spencer] failed to provide and protect [her sons] with care, supervision, and the services necessary to maintain [their] physical and mental health,” the report read.
Officers found Spencer the next day and arrested her.
