A shootout in the streets of Northwest Miami-Dade sent three men to the Ryder Trauma Center on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. The motive is unknown, and police are now searching for the culprits and a dark-colored SUV involved in the shooting.

“Many bullets were fired today,” Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told reporters at a press conference near the crime scene.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting around 1 p.m. ar Northwest 18th Avenue and 64th Street in Model City, Zabaleta said. Two rifles were found at the scene along with three wounded men who were taken to a local trauma center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The injured are expected to survive, he said. It is unknown how many shots were fired.

Police learned the hail of gunfire began with two groups of people shooting at each other — one group was inside a dark-colored SUV and the other standing outside. It’s unknown who shot first, but the wounded men were all inside the SUV, Zabaleta said.

Detectives were inspecting Tuesday afternoon the footage from nearby security cameras that caught the exchange of gunfire.

“These individuals, you can see that some of them hang outside the window... they open the door a little bit and they open fire towards the people that were standing there,” Zabaleta said. “That’s when there was an exchange of gunfire.”

“Throughout the incident, you see three individuals that run from the vehicle.”

The driver of the SUV and the vehicle itself remain at large. Detectives have detained one person and were questioning them Tuesday afternoon. It’s unclear whether they played a role in the shooting or will face charges.

Police are asking anyone with information about the SUV or the shooting to call the Miami-Dade Police Department at 305-476-5423 or contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers anonymously at 305-471-8477.
