A 13-year-old girl shot and killed in a residential area of North Lauderdale was identified on Tuesday by detectives as Samyiah James.

Lolita Catis, her mother, told Local 10 News that her daughter had asked her permission to go to a friend’s house. James’ family members told the news outlet that she was supposed to start 7th grade soon.

“That was very horrible what they did to her, and she was only 13. My daughter didn’t even get to see her life or enjoy her life yet,” Catis said.

At around 10:45 p.m. Monday, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies rushed to the 7400 block of Southwest 12th Court after shots were fired in the area. There they found James with a gunshot wound.

The teen was taken by helicopter to a hospital where she was pronounced dead around 11:30 p.m.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection to the fatal shooting.
