Two suspects who led a cross-county chase and shot and wounded a Golden Beach police sergeant early Saturday morning are in custody.

The pursuit started after Hollywood police fielded a call for assistance from Golden Beach police around 3:15 a.m. Saturday, according to Deanna Bettineschi, public information manager for the Hollywood Police Department.

Golden Beach police and deputies from Sunny Isles Beach were trying to stop two unidentified suspects in a stolen car heading north on Ocean Drive. The suspects tried to turn onto Hallandale Beach Boulevard but lost control of the car and took off running, Bettineschi said.

After they had bailed from the car, Golden Beach Sgt. Joseph Bautista chased the suspects and as he ran he was shot twice in the arm.

Bautista was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital. “He is stable and going into surgery,” Bettineschi said in a media release. “We are grateful the injuries to the sergeant are not more severe.”

Hollywood police officers captured the shooter and another suspect and have them in custody. Hollywood police also found the gun used in the shooting, WPLG-Local 10 reported.

Police have not released the names of the suspects or what charges they face.
