An assistant football coach of a high school in Broward County had an “inappropriate sexual relationship” with an underage girl and has been arrested, according to authorities. School officials said he has been fired.

Hollywood detectives accuse Maquedius Dashad Bain, who was an assistant football coach at South Broward High School, of having a sexual relationship with a minor between the ages of 12 and 17, police said Tuesday in a news release. Authorities said they were notified Saturday about the alleged crime.

Bain was arrested Monday on eight counts of sexual battery, one count of an authority figure soliciting or engaging in sexual conduct with a student, and one count of traveling to meet a minor to seduce, solicit, lure, entice or engage in unlawful sexual conduct with a child, county court records show. Bain, 28, was in the county’s main jail as of Tuesday evening.

Bain had been a “temporary employee” as assistant football coach with Broward County Public Schools for a year and his employment has been terminated, district spokeswoman Nadine Drew told the Miami Herald.

According to the arrest warrant for Bain, the girl said that the coach had multiple sexual encounters with her, most recently on Friday. Investigators said the girl’s mother also found explicit text messages between the coach and her daughter.

The warrant also states that Bain met the girl at the beginning of the school year. They exchanged phone numbers, and texted back and forth, according to detectives, who say Bain even brought the girl with him to pick up his children at their school. The girl described the beginning of their relationship as a “father/daughter bond,” police said.

Their first sexual encounter, police say, happened in Hollywood Beach on Nov. 5, then again on Nov. 9, and also on Friday, the girl told investigators. Police said that a look into the girl’s cellphone also revealed that Bain, who called himself a “grown man” in a series of explicit texts, admitted to having sex with the girl, and sent her pictures of himself.
