A 10-year-old boy has died after being shot in a northeast Miami-Dade apartment Thursday afternoon, police said.

Miami-Dade officers found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound in the upper chest when they were called to an apartment complex at around 5:10 p.m., in the 600 block of Ives Dairy Road, Miami-Dade Police Spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta said.

He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Ryder Trauma Center but died from his injuries, Zabaleta said.

Four other children ranging in age from 9 to 15 were also in the apartment. Their mother, a corrections officer, was at work, Zabaleta said. The children told officers they were all related.

A law enforcement source told the Miami Herald that the shooter was the boy’s 13-year-old brother.

Police originally told the media the boy was shot by “another juvenile member of the household.”

Investigators are still trying to figure out where the gun came from and the familial relationship of the children.
