Broward high school teacher faces charge of having sex with student, deputies say
A language arts teacher at a Broward County high school found himself in cuffs after he had sexual relations with a student, authorities said.
Lavelle Jamal Gordon was charged with offenses against students by an authority figure, according to a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant. The 29-year-old is in jail and faces a $75,000 bond.
On Oct. 13, Hallandale Magnet High School’s administration asked 43 students from Gordon’s class to recount a “disruptive incident” that happened the day before between Gordon and a female student, the warrant read.
A majority of the students alleged that Gordon was “play fighting, hugging below the waist, hugging for an extended period of time, and drinking from the same bottle.”
A sheriff’s detective did note that some students said they did not see this happen.
Meanwhile, other students said this wasn’t the only time they witnessed Gordon doing inappropriate things with the student during school hours, the warrant read. One added that they saw the female student sitting on his lap during class. Another alleges they saw the two eating lunch together and watching a movie in the classroom.
Broward County Public Schools said Gordon had worked at the school since January 2021.
“The District takes allegations of misconduct very seriously, as ensuring the safety of our students is our top priority,” BCPS said in a statement. “Hallandale High School’s administration continues to work with the District’s Special Investigative Unit and law enforcement regarding this matter.”
The school’s superintendent had a conference with the student and her parents, in which she told them she did not have a relationship with Gordon.
After the conference, the warrant reveals the student’s mother found a TikTok video of the two, which showed Gordon kissing the student at a park near her home.
The student met Gordon in March. Since then, they have linked up seven times outside of school, she told detectives. At least twice, he had sex with her, the warrant read.
Gordon was reassigned to a position away from the school and students pending the outcome of the case, according to the school district.
