Teens fleeing from cops in a stolen Mercedes leads to fatal crash in Broward, BSO says
Two teenage boys fleeing from police in a stolen Mercedes were arrested Sunday after initiating a multi-car crash in South Florida that killed a woman and sent several others to the hospital, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Fort Lauderdale police said the 15-year-old driver has been charged with grand theft auto, aggravated fleeding and eluding with serious injury or death and resisting an officer without violence. His 13-year-old passenger has been charged with misdemeanors.
The Miami Herald isn’t naming either teen because they’ve been charged in juvenile court. BSO declined to identify the injured people and the woman killed, citing a law that protects the identities of crime victims.
Just before 6 a.m., Fort Lauderdale police officers were pursuing a stolen 2021 Mercedes Benz E350 in the area of Sunrise Boulevard and Powerline Road, BSO said Monday in a news release.
The driver didn’t stop for police and headed north on Powerline Road, according to investigators. As the Mercedes entered the intersection at West Oakland Park Boulevard, BSO said, it T-boned a westbound Chevrolet Cruze that had the green light.
Detectives say the Chevrolet rotated following the impact, crashing into a Dodge Durango going the same way. Following the collision, the teens exited the Mercedes and ran away, according to BSO.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported six people to a nearby hospital, four from the Cruze and two from the Durango, BSO said. A woman who was a passenger in the Cruze was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The intersection of Oakland Park Boulevard and Powerline Road remained closed for over eight hours after the crash, reopening around 1:15 p.m. BSO said the two teenage boys were taken into custody around 6 p.m.
Fort Lauderdale police originally said they had been investigating the theft of three cars from a home in the 2500 block of Mercedes Drive, when they saw theMercedes around 5 a.m. in the 900 block of West Sunrise Boulevard. On Monday, Fort Lauderdale police corrected the number of stolen cars to two.
