NBA player Taurean Prince, arrested at Miami airport on drug warrant, granted bond
Minnesota pro basketball journeyman Taurean Prince was arrested at Miami International Airport on Thursday on a drug warrant out of Texas.
Prince, 28, who recently signed a two-year, $16 million contract extension with the Timberwolves, was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Thursday evening.
On Friday, Prince made his first appearance in Miami-Dade court and was granted a $2,500 bond.
His defense lawyer, David Weinstein, said the charge was already being dismissed in Tarrant County, Texas, and stemmed from a trace amount of marijuana found during a traffic stop. Prince was unaware that police had filed the warrant for the low-level felony, Weinsten said.
“If he had known warrant existed, he would have surrendered,” Weinstein told Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer.
Prince, who said he was in Miami training, assured the judge he will return to Texas, where he lives.
“Make sure you go to Texas and deal with your open warrant,” Glazer told him.
The 6-foot-6 small forward hails from San Antonio, Texas, and played his college ball at Baylor University before he was selected with the 12 overall pick by the Utah Jazz. He was later traded to Atlanta, where he played three years. He later had stints with Brooklyn and Cleveland.
Last year, Prince was traded to Minnesota, where he averaged 7.3 points per game over 69 games.
