A man who tried to stop a car burglary was shot and wounded early Tuesday in Lauderhill, police said.

Detectives are searching for three masked suspects driving a dark sedan, Maj. Mike Santiago of the Lauderhill Police Department told the Miami Herald in an email Tuesday afternoon.

“While processing the scene, investigators discovered another vehicle burglarized,” Santiago said. “However, at this time [detectives] are unable to determine whether it was committed by the same suspects.”

The shooting happened shortly after 5 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 4800 block of Northwest 22nd Street, police said.

Investigators say multiple men were trying to break into a vehicle at the complex. At some point, its owner went outside with his gun and fired a “warning shot” in the air, police said.

The burglars shot back, grazing him, and then left, police said.

The owner was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he’s expected to recover, police said.

Police didn’t release additional information.

Anyone with information that can help investigators is asked to call Lauderhill police at 954-497-4700 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 (TIPS).
