Officer fatally shoots knife-wielding man fighting with his mom in Kendall, police say

A mother’s screams coming from inside a Kendale Lakes apartment Wednesday night had Miami-Dade officers busting down the door, rushing in and shooting her 21-year-old knife-wielding son, police said.

The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 8000 block of Southwest 149 Avenue — a quiet stretch of suburbia.

Police say two 911 calls came in to report hearing a “violent encounter,” and a woman screaming.

When officers arrived they heard the screaming coming from inside the apartment. They tried to get the mom to open the door, but when she didn’t, they broke down the door, according to police.

Once they were inside they found Richard Hollis with two knives, said Alvaro Zabaleta, a police spokesman.

“He did not comply with the officers’ command and the officer discharged his firearm striking the subject,” Zabaleta said.

Hollis was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital where he died. His mom was not injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates all shootings involving officers.
